Food insecurity in US dropped during pandemic--study

Through government programs that included the expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), food insecurity among low-income US adults dropped by nearly 5% during the pandemic but rose by 2022, according to a study today in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Vermont, Food Industry Begin Court Fight Over GMO Label Law

      

A coalition of industry groups sued Vermont over the state's new law requiring food producers to put special labels on products treated with GMOs. It makes Vermont ground zero of a very big food fight.

Tiny Vermont this month boldly went where no US state had gone before, enacting a law to require food producers who treat their products with genetically modified organisms to let consumers know that on the packaging. Now, the state is going, perhaps just as boldly, to court.

A lawsuit filed Thursday challenges Vermont’s GMO-labeling law on grounds that it usurps federal regulatory authority and negatively affects interstate commerce.

The Senate gave a decisive 26-2 vote Tuesday for a bill that would require labeling of foods that contain genetically modified ingredients, a strong indication that Vermont could become the first state in the nation to enact such a law.

“We are saying people have a right to know what’s in their food,” said Senate President Pro Tempore John Campbell, D-Windsor.

Campbell and other supporters argued that they believe they have written a bill that is legally defensible.

About Wellspring Farm!

Since 2003, we have been growing five acres of high quality certified organic vegetables and flowers on our beautiful farm on the banks of the Winooski River in Marshfield, Vermont. The majority of our produce is sold via community supported agriculture, or CSA. See our CSA Membership information Our enthusiastic CSA members pick up their produce weekly at the farm or in Montpelier from mid June to early October. Shares include an abundance of fresh, organic, seasonal vegetables and fruit direct from our fields. Enjoy pick-your-own crops like peas, beans, cherry tomatoes and flowers for an on-farm experience. Notice the changes in the season, cut flowers in the garden with a friend, and keep farmland active in your community! Wellspring Farm is the recipient of the 2005 Conservation Farm of the Year Award Awarded by the Winooski Natural Resource Conservation District.

Each seed tells the story of its entire life history, millions of years in the making.  A few seeds, in a single generation, may travel the globe.  Most will stay within their watershed and most likely, their microclimate.  In this way, seeds become profoundly adapted to place.
