With the first case of omicron confirmed in California and more cases expected across the U.S., public health officials who know the difference between good and bad crisis communication say they can't afford to be quiet and wait until scientists know how risky the new variant is before they speak out.

"We don't want to just be silent on the matter, because then that can cause fear and then that can allow for misinformation to creep in," says Elya Franciscus, the epidemiology operations manager for COVID-19 in Harris County, Texas.

Last Friday, just a day after South African scientists first announced the discovery of the omicron variant, Europe reported its first case: The new coronavirus variant was in Belgium. Before the weekend was out, Australia, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Italy and other countries had all found cases. But in the United States, scientists kept searching.

Colorado reports third omicron case in the United States

Third omicron case in the United States detected in Colorado Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced Thursday that a case of the omicron variant of the coronavirus has been documented in his state. Andrew Miller Fox News

"Just moments ago, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed the first Colorado case of the omicron variant," Polis said in a press conference. "It is somebody who just traveled to southern Africa and returned."

Polis said that the individual is a female suffering mild symptoms who is isolating at home.
