New Hampshire reported 8 additional COVID-19 deaths, the most in a single day since Sept 29

Eight additional Granite Staters have died due to COVID-19, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday.

That's the most deaths announced in a single day since September 29, when nine deaths were announced.

New Hampshire state health officials have announced 12 additional COVID-19 deaths. The deaths are for the past week, Sept. 22 to Sept. 28.

The state on Thursday also reported 25 institutions that are dealing with a coronavirus outbreak, as of Sept. 28, including the New Hampshire Veterans Home.

Epidemiologist warns that COVID-19 cases aren't declining in New Hampshire

While many people want to move on from the COVID-19 pandemic, New Hampshire's epidemiologist said Wednesday that the virus is still very present in the state and is still deadly.

COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been declining nationwide in recent weeks, but state epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan said the numbers in New Hampshire are holding steady.

Chan said that since May, about 100 New Hampshire hospital patients have tested positive for COVID-19 each day, and about one person has died each day of COVID-19.

A federal program pays for funerals for victims of COVID. Few Vermonters are using it

Since 2020, the federal government has run a program to help ease the financial burden of those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19. The Federal Emergency Management Agency offers up to $9,000 to cover the funeral costs of people who have died because of the virus.

But data shows that few Vermonters who would qualify for the grant have actually applied for or received it.

Higher education plans for dealing with monkeypox appear opaque or nonexistent. Schools have begun sending students information about monkeypox through websites and newsletters, but large public colleges contacted by States Newsroom were unable to explain how they’ll help students isolate or keep up with their classes during the two to four weeks they’ll be contagious if they contract monkeypox.

In New Hampshire, few colleges and universities have posted public information about monkeypox. The University of New Hampshire currently has no guidance on its website for students that contract the virus, though a spokeswoman for the university said that information is coming soon.

The state announced three additional COVID-19 deaths over the past week, as well as 1,357 new cases of the virus.

Three other deaths, which occurred before the Aug. 18-24 time period, were also confirmed to be related to the coronavirus. To date, New Hampshire has recorded 2,652 deaths.

New cases continue a downward trend. There were 238 new cases reported on Aug. 24, according to the state's COVID dashboard.
